Breast cancer develops in the lobules (milk-producing glands) or the ducts (pathways transporting milk to the nipple) present in the breasts. They begin as a small lump or mass in these confined areas, can grow bigger, and then spread to nearby lymph nodes. They can also pass through the bloodstream, targeting other organs of the body. The cancer cells can also spread to the tissues surrounding the breast, including the chest wall.
There are different types of breast cancer with distinct and identical symptoms. While some types can develop very fast, others take years to develop.
Some of the signs of breast cancer to not ignore are:
- Changes in breast appearance
It is essential to inspect any changes in the breast. There can be dimpling around the breasts, changes in nipple shape or direction, and nipple discharge. There can also be scaling and redness of the breasts and the formation of lumps. - Between-period bleeding
It is essential to check for signs of spotting in case one still on their periods. While abnormal bleeding can be due to other causes, breast cancer could be one of them. Bleeding after menopause is never normal and calls for an immediate doctor visit. - Changes in skin condition, color, or texture
An orange-peel texture, some moles, and other spots indicate the possibility of breast cancer. Thickening or hardening of the skin texture is a warning sign of breast cancer that should not be ignored. - Blood in urine or stools
Blood in stools can be a sign of hemorrhoids or even colon cancer. Blood in the urine is often a sign of bladder or kidney cancer. However, these conditions can also signify something that is not any type of cancer. Getting a test done is recommended to discover the potential of breast cancer. - Trouble swallowing
It’s a warning sign of breast cancer if one finds it difficult to swallow food on a regular basis. This is often accompanied by vomiting. While it indicates the possibility of breast cancer, it could also be throat or stomach cancer. - Unintentional weight loss
Losing a significant amount of weight with any diet plan or exercise is a cause for concern. While in most cases it’s not cancer and caused by the stress on the thyroid, visiting a doctor is recommended. It can also be a sign of pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, or stomach cancer. - Lumps or hard knots in the armpits and the surrounding areas
One of the signs of breast cancer to not ignore is the formation of lumps or hard, small knots under the arms. - Heartburn
Even after incorporating changes in one’s diet, if the heartburn persists for over two weeks, it is essential to visit a doctor for screening. This condition could also be the result of stomach, throat, or ovarian cancer.
