Common Health Issues in Cats and Dogs

Just like their owners, dogs and cats can have a number of different issues that affect their overall health and well being. When a dog or cat’s health is compromised, their physical health and behavior may change as well (i.e., eating, sleeping, walking, and play may be impacted).
Here are some of the most common health issues found in cats and dogs, and a few tips on how owners can help care for their sick pets:

1. Skin allergies
Dogs and cats can have a variety of skin allergies that can result from exposure to different irritants. Some of the main items that can cause allergies in both dogs and cats include pollen, dust, insect bites, foods, mold and chemicals in shampoos. If you notice that your pet has a bad skin reaction, try to think about anything different they may have been exposed to. Make a note if you tried a new shampoo or went somewhere new to uncover the cause of the allergic reaction. If you suspect that the allergies are due to fleas, try using a dog flea treatment.

2. Bladder or urinary tract disease
Bladder and urinary tract disease can become a serious and reoccurring issue in dogs and cats if it is not treated properly. Some factors that may increase the risk of this disease include diabetes mellitus, skin diseases, bladder stones, neurologic diseases and cancer. These issues can be diagnosed through blood count tests, x rays, ultrasounds and other types of testing.

3. Ear infections
Ear infections are much more prevalent in dogs than cats, so dog owners should always be on the lookout for this common issue. You can detect an ear infection if you notice your dog has frequent head shaking, ear odor, scratching of its ear, redness and swelling, discharge and a lack of balance. A vet can treat ear infections by prescribing medication. You’ll need to administer that medication regularly to your pet, as well as follow your vet’s instructions for cleaning the ear and ear canal.

4. Periodontitis or dental disease
Periodontitis and other dental diseases are often found in dogs, but only rarely in cats. These diseases typically result from a buildup of plaque on the teeth, which can lead to inflammation. This disease does not have noticeable symptoms, so it is important to see the vet regularly to check for dental issues. If left untreated, periodontitis can lead to tooth decay and other serious health issues. To prevent dental problems, invest in the healthiest foods and treats possible for your pets and try to incorporate treats and foods that help naturally scale tartar from teeth.

5. Chronic kidney disease
This disease is typically found in older cats and dogs. It typically gets worse with age and can be diagnosed by a vet. To help improve the lifespan and quality of life for a pet with this disease it is important to modify their diet and give them a proper supply of vitamins. Kidney disease can be difficult to manage, so ensure you get pet insurance quotes to help you cover the cost of treatments for your pet.
