5 Ways to Get Relief from Arthritis
Arthritis is a painful degenerative condition in which the hard slippery substance known as cartilage between bone joints starts to break down. The loss of this cartilage allows the bones to rub against each other causing pain and inflammation. There are several forms of arthritis, some can be caused by immune system issues others by toxins in the body but all can be painful and debilitating. This condition cannot be reversed but there are ways to find relief from symptoms:
1. Enbrel (Entanercept)
Biologic response modifiers like Enbrel (Entanercept) is a drug that’s used for rheumatoid arthritis. This type of arthritis is caused by the body’s own immune system attacking the joints and degrading the protective cartilage. Enbrel (Entanercept) suppresses the immune system which in turn prevents the immune response that damages the joints. This medication cannot reverse damage that has already occurred but it can stem further damage and relieve the symptoms of joint pain, fatigue and stiffness. Due to its immunosuppressive, however, it does increase the risk of none related infections.
2. Vedolizumab (Entyvio)
Vedolizumab is actually a drug which is used primarily to ease the symptoms of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. It does this by reducing inflammation in the body, mainly in the digestive system. There is, however, some evidence that arthritis sufferers who suffer from Crohn’s or UC have found some relief from the inflammation in their joints. It is not a stand-alone arthritis drug and would likely not be prescribed for this condition. But those who suffer from a digestive complaint and arthritis may find this drug beneficial.
3. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
There is a vast array of NSAIDs available over the counter and by prescription depending on the severity of symptoms. Used specifically for Rheumatoid Arthritis, these drugs help reduce the inflammation and swelling caused by the condition. As a result, pain is decreased and joint movement is improved for a time. NSAIDs do not repair the damage already caused and can only really relieve symptoms.
4. Tremfya for psoriatic arthritis
Psoriatic arthritis is connected to the skin condition psoriasis. The same immune response that causes the skin complaints associated with psoriasis also causes damage to the joints. Tremfya was recently approved by the FDA to help relieve symptoms of Psoriatic Arthritis. It is a biologic so works by suppressing the immune system in order to stop it attacking the joints. This gives relief from the pain and stiffness caused by arthritis.
5. Corticosteroids (Prednisone)
Corticosteroids like prednisone are a two-fold treatment for arthritis symptoms. It acts not only to suppress immune responses that attack joints but also as an anti-inflammatory. It not only treats symptoms of arthritis but also UC, psoriasis and lupus.
6. Joint repair or replacement surgery
It is possible to replace severely degraded cartilage in some joints with an artificial implant. This would be done in very severe circumstances where pain is intense and joint motion is extremely compromised. The results are pain relief and restoration of some level of joint mobility. However, these repairs are usually done in the hands so results are limited in terms of joint mobility. Some level of dexterity can be achieved which is preferable to complete immobility.
